IVF

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a reproductive technology aiding couples facing infertility to conceive. It involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body, in a lab, and implanting the resulting embryo into the uterus.

Know more about ‘IVF’

  1. Traditional IVF: Involves retrieving mature eggs from a woman's ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a lab dish.
  2. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Directly injects a single sperm into an egg to aid fertilization, often for male infertility cases.
  3. Assisted Hatching: Thins the embryo's outer layer (zona pellucida) to help it hatch and implant in the uterus.
  4. Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT): Screens embryos for genetic disorders before implantation, reducing inherited disease risks.
  1. Ovarian Stimulation: Administers hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
  2. Egg Retrieval: Retrieves mature eggs from the ovaries using a minor surgical procedure under sedation.
  3. Fertilization: Fertilizes retrieved eggs with sperm in a lab dish, using traditional IVF or ICSI.
  4. Embryo Culture: Monitors and cultures fertilized eggs in the lab until they reach the blastocyst stage.
  5. Embryo Transfer: Transfers one or more viable embryos into the woman's uterus using a thin catheter.
  6. Pregnancy Test: Conducts a pregnancy test approximately two weeks after embryo transfer to determine success.
  1. Treatment of Infertility: Provides hope for couples with infertility issues like blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, or male factor infertility.
  2.  Genetic Screening:  Identifies genetic abnormalities in embryos, reducing the risk of passing genetic disorders to offspring.
  1. Same-Sex Couples and Single Parents: Enables same-sex couples and single individuals to have biological children using donor eggs, sperm, or embryos.
